Diabetes Exercise Program The benefits of exercise can't be overstated for those who are prediabetic or have type 2 diabetes.

The benefits of exercise and lifestyle interventions in preventing and treating type 2 diabetes are widely recognised. Approximately 33% of people who are prediabetic will develop type 2 diabetes within a decade, and with one in six Australian adults having prediabetes it has never been more important to take control of your health.

Our Diabetes Exercise Program provides a safe and supportive environment for you to manage your diabetes, with a team of exercise professionals to guide you along the way. The Exercise Physiologists at Brellah are trained exercise professionals who implement the latest research to equip you with the knowledge, tools and confidence as you progress through your program.

Who can attend?

If you’ve been told by your GP or Endocrinologist that you may be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, or you have already been diagnosed, this program is designed specifically for you to help in managing with the right advice and guidance.

Do I need a referral to attend the diabetes program?

You do not need a referral, however if you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for part of your program. Check with your usual GP or arrange to see a Brellah GP to find out if you are eligible.

Can I use private health to claim for these classes?

Yes! You are able to use private health for exercise classes led by our exercise physiologist. You are not able to claim for drop-in sessions which are designed for you to follow your personalised program independently, with support from an exercise professional.

How long should I attend the program?

As everyone is different, we don’t ask you to sign up for a set time-frame. We encourage a community environment and we hope you’ll enjoy the sessions enough to make this part of your weekly routine. We can also work alongside your GP and/or endocrinologist to determine the most suitable plan for you.

How many sessions should I do?

It is recommended that people with diabetes exercise at least 3 times per week at a moderate to vigorous intensity. This is why we suggest attending 2 group exercise physiology-led classes plus at least one of our drop-in clinics where you can complete your own program with the help of an exercise professional.

I don’t like group classes, can I just attend the drop-in clinic?

If you have been referred by your GP on a Medicare plan, this must be used in group classes led by an exercise physiologist.

If you are self-referred you may attend our drop-in clinics however we encourage you to see an exercise physiologist once per week to ensure you are on the right track with your program. We can also arrange for semi-private sessions.
