Move Your Mind Exercise Program The sooner and longer people undertake regular exercise, the better their chances are of delaying disease progression or preventing dementia from developing.

Research has shown that regular exercise can benefit mental, emotional and physical health in people with mild cognitive impairment and mild to moderate dementia. Brellah’s Move Your Mind exercise program draws on clinical evidence and expertise to deliver group and individual classes that are both fun and engaging.

Participants are booked in for an assessment by an exercise physiologist to understand their strength, mobility, balance and coordination, in order to tailor their exercise program accordingly. Then if qualified, attend a bi-weekly, 12-week evidence-based  program designed to improve (or at minimum maintain) physical, cognitive and mental  health outcomes in people living with dementia.

As part of our program, you may be invited to participate in a clinical research study with Macquarie University. Details on the study will be shared soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend?

If you’ve been told by your GP or Geriatrician that you may be at risk of dementia, or you have already been diagnosed, this program is designed specifically for you to help in managing it with the right advice and guidance.

Do I need a referral to attend the Dementia Exercise Program?

You will need a referral from your GP or Geriatrician. If you have been diagnosed with dementia you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for part of your program. Check with your usual GP or arrange to see a Brellah GP to find out if you are eligible.

Can I use private health to claim for these classes?

Many private health insurers cover our initial screening assessment and classes through their extras cover. Please check with your insurer.

Can I use my home care package to cover the cost of classes?

Many home care package providers cover exercise physiology through their Level 3 or 4 packages. Consult with your home care package provider about reimbursing you for the cost of the program.

How long should I attend the program?

The program runs for 12 weeks and we encourage people to build their community and make exercise a part of their weekly routine in the long term. We can work alongside you and your GP and/or Geriatrician to determine the most suitable plan for you.

How many sessions should I do?

Clinical evidence recommends that people living with or at risk of dementia exercise at least two times per week. This is why we recommend attending two group exercise physiology-led classes each week. We encourage you to attend for the full 12 weeks in order to get the most out of the program.

I’d prefer to attend 1:1 sessions. Is this possible?

Of course. Our Exercise Physiologist can provide you with specific recommendations following your initial screening assessment. Our 1:1 sessions are $110/session.

What should I bring and wear?

We suggest wearing comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely and flat, secure footwear. There may be some classes that you are encouraged to participate in bare feet (if you feel safe to do so). We also recommend bringing and drink bottle, towel and any necessary medications if required.

Please ensure you have your Medicare, DVA and / or Private Health Cards with you to allow us to process any rebates.

Do you have parking available?

Yes, we have free on-site car parking at the front and side of the building. We also have disabled parking and lift access.

What happens if I miss a class?

Not to worry! Please let our Exercise Physiologist know if you are unable to attend in advance by calling 02 9122 0888.
