What is a dietitian?

Dietitians are qualified allied health professionals who specialise in food and nutrition. Their aim is to apply the science of food and nutrition to promote general health as well as prevent and treat disease. The main role of a dietitian is to help people make informed dietary choices to improve or maintain their health, and reduce the risk of developing chronic disease.

What do dietitians do?

Our dietitians are experienced in managing nutritional needs across a diverse range of chronic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, food intolerances, and for weight management.

Among other services, our dietitians provide:

  • Medical nutrition therapy for various health conditions through personalised dietary plans
  • Support for healthy weight loss or gain
  • Dietary guidance for preventative health and wellness
  • Nutritional advice tailored to different life stages
  • Sports and performance nutrition

Reasons to see a dietitian

People see a dietitian for many reasons, often related to improving health, managing medical conditions, or achieving specific wellness goals. Our dietitians at Brellah commonly see patients who need:

  • Management of a chronic health condition such as diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorder, or cancer
  • A tailored eating plan and help with building sustainable dietary habits in order to lose, gain or maintain weight
  • Advice in identifying triggers when experiencing digestive issues and recommending suitable diets
  • Guidance in avoiding allergens while still meeting nutritional needs
  • Dietary support during anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or other disordered eating patterns
  • Support with nutritional needs during preconception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding to ensure the health of both parent and baby
  • A nutritional plan that improves performance, enhances recovery, and manages energy and hydration levels for athletes and active individuals

Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?

No. However, a patient health summary from your GP can assist our dietitians in understanding your current issues. Medicare rebates may be available with a GP referral as part of a GP chronic disease management plan.
